The Whole World in Your Back Pocket

Over the years, social media has continued to grow. Whether or not you are part of it, there’s no denying that it has become a big part of today’s world.

Not only has social media brought the possibility of staying connected with your loved ones, but it has also brought many opportunities to individuals and companies.

Staying Connected

Social media is only changing our communication. It’s not killing it.

Having such a powerful tool in your back pocket gives you great opportunities. Having the ability to chat with anyone, in any part of the world, with a simple click, is mesmerizing.

Some may say that social media is taking away the meaningful connections that in-person conversations bring to you. But it’s actually giving you a way to stay connected. It keeps you in touch and lets you stay close with your loved ones.

Personally, I have found this tool very useful throughout my college experience. Being an international student is hard enough, but the worst part is being so far away from my family. The option of flying to see them on a random weekend is nearly impossible. The flights, being expensive and long, have made it difficult. But, through social media, I have been able to stay in touch with them and to watch what they are up to. It helps me keep up with their lives while being so far away.

Having the option of writing to your loved ones on a random day is the best feeling. If you miss them, you don’t have to wait to see them or for them to have free time to call them. You can just send a text message and that’s it. Talking by phone takes more time. You must both be available at the same free time, and that can be hard. Social media gives you the necessary tools to have freedom, do your own thing, and still be able to talk with others.

Tools and Opportunities

Have you ever stopped to think how many opportunities have social media brought to us?

Jobs such as influencers and social media manager have been created thanks to social media. People can now earn money through social media. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner earn millions of dollars for each post on Instagram. Social media has become people’s job.

“It’s becoming a vital part of what companies do, and that’s good news for job seekers in a market that -- admit it -- you know is brutal,” says Bernhard Warner, editor of Social Media Influence, a London-based industry newsletter.

Now, companies have a free media platform to advertise their products or services. They can build their brand image, bring in new customers, sell products, all through social media. Also, people are now being able to work from any part of the world. Influencers can work in any part of the world; they just need their phone and internet. Not only influencers, but social media has also brought the opportunity for anyone to do that. You could be at the beach, with your family, and still be able to work and communicate with your customers and coworkers.

Besides job opportunities and growth, current events are reported around the world in a matter of minutes. If you are in the United States and something happens in Syria, you will be able to read the news online minutes after it happens. Social media has brought the accessibility to information from anywhere in the world. People can be informed about current events and be on top of what is happening in the world.

Never forget that social media has brought us all together. Whether you view it in a personal or business matter, it has given us opportunities we couldn’t have without it.

Take this as an advantage. Keep in touch with your family and friends. One text message can mean a lot to someone. Use social media to promote your business, networking, and expand your brand. Social media is your greatest tool and should not be wasted.
